What foods can be donated?

Accepted Answer

We accept prepared meals and hot food, baked goods and bread, fresh produce, packaged and shelf-stable goods, and dairy or refrigerated items. If you're unsure whether something qualifies, just reach out — we'd rather hear from you than have good food go to waste.

Question 2

Do you accept food that's close to its expiration date?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Food that is still safe to eat but approaching its sell-by or best-by date is exactly what we're here to rescue. We work quickly to get it to people who need it. We cannot accept food that is already spoiled, moldy, or has passed its use-by date.

Question 3

How do you make sure donated food is safe to eat?

We follow food safety best practices at every step. Hot food should be kept hot (above 140°F) and cold food kept cold (below 40°F) until pickup or drop-off. We do not redistribute food that has been left at unsafe temperatures for extended periods.

Are there any liability concerns for my business?

No. The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects businesses that donate food in good faith from civil and criminal liability. Donating surplus food is not only safe for your community — it's protected by federal law.

Question 5

What's the difference between pickup and drop-off?

With pickup, one of our volunteers comes to your location to collect the food — ideal if you can't leave during service hours. With drop-off, you bring the food to a designated community fridge or distribution point. Either option works, and you can indicate your preference when you register.

How much notice do you need before a pickup?

For scheduled recurring pickups, we'll set a regular time that works for you. For one-off donations, a few hours' notice helps us coordinate a volunteer. Reach out and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Do I have to donate every week?

Not at all. We work with businesses that donate daily, weekly, or just occasionally when they have extra. There's no minimum commitment — even a one-time donation makes a real difference.

Can I donate on an irregular schedule?

Absolutely. If your surplus varies week to week, that's completely fine. You can reach out whenever you have food to donate and we'll coordinate from there. Many of our partners donate whenever they have extra, with no fixed schedule at all.

Who receives the donated food?

Accepted Answer

Donated food goes to community fridges and distribution points serving neighbors in Westchester County and the Bronx — areas where food insecurity rates are significant. Recipients include families, seniors, and individuals who rely on these resources to get through the week.

Question 10

Is there a tax benefit for my business?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Businesses that donate food inventory may be eligible for an enhanced federal tax deduction under IRS rules. We recommend speaking with your accountant for specifics, but food donation can be a meaningful benefit in addition to the community impact.
